Busy shopping day downtown? Better cut off an Envoy and a group of pedestrians to turn left.

It was a bright, clear day.

I was being followed by someone; I needed to make my escape. The tail slowed behind me, while I waited - I knew if so waited much longer at the intersection, my ass was toast. Gone. Finished. A greasy stain on the asphalt.

I saw my opening and took it. I swerved around the gaggle of pedestrians entering the crosswalk, and deftly avoided the oncoming S.U.V., making good my escape. With that, I sped off, ensuring my evasion of my pursuers was complete.

The only way to really justify the rider’s maneuver is if he was absolutely sure that the Envoy driver was giving up his right-of-way, and that the pedestrians would not proceed any faster than a walking pace.

But that theory falls apart all too easily. Yes, the Envoy driver did hesitate, but not long enough to confirm that he was actually forfeiting his right-of-way to wave the rider on through.

If there was no Envoy, perhaps the rider’s acceleration could have cleared the intersection before the pedestrians got very far. But in that two seconds or so of hesitation, the walkers got a head start. And the rider knows he’s cutting it too close, because he’s running wide and avoiding the “apex” of his turn.

Now what would he have done if the Envoy had accelerated with the same enthusiasm? He would have been up shit creek, because the Envoy driver had the right of way, and the crash would have been caught on camera.

Doesn’t seem like anyone was actually cut off. Envoy fell asleep and pedestrians were on their half of the walkway. Sure he coulda waited but this is pretty tame.

When I first started driving, sometimes at intersections without red turn lights, I would forget I didn’t have the right of way... it happens. He might not be an asshole, maybe just forgetful or distracted.
